Pool heater install

I had my builder run the gas, electrical, and heater bypass for a 400BTU Jandy JXI heater. Plan was to install the heater later. I just asked for a quote to install the heater and it was $7K. That seems extremely high for what I imagine is a pretty simply drop in install. Any thoughts? How important is the installer for something like this? Thoughts? Thanks.

That's the heater i have. I actually had to rewire it that part is simple. Gas is gas plumbing which is all screw fittings no sweating pipes. There's also the plumbing connection. Easy too. All in all I'd say installation would take an hour or so and is worth $300 at most. If it was me i wouldn't hesitate to do it myself.

Good to know. I am half inclined to attempt an install myself. Need to find out where to purchase though. I haven't been able to find it online. I may reach out if I go this route and ask for some pointers. I'll take some pics of the area and the rough in and post too.

Yeah that's the issue. Jandy no longer sells to the public and if you self install the warranty is void. But for that install price you could buy 3 of that heater i think it's like $2500. And you could always but another brand they will all work through the Jandy automation.

Jandy has tried to stop all internet sales of it's pool equipment so you don't find the heaters sold online. And Jandy will not give any warranty for equipment bought through the internet. That is why your PB is quoting you the high price. You are paying for their Jandy support and warranty.

Look at buying a Raypak heater and hiring a plumber to do the gas connection.

Your builder is ripping you off.

Call around several other pool stores/companies and get a quote. Failing that, buy the unit yourself for $2600-$2800 and get a plumber to install it - $500 tops. If it dies during the warranty period, just buy another - you'll still be ahead!

Wow that link you posted includes installation! That is a GREAT deal!

Definitely a jacked price. I had a new Raypak installed a few years ago by the only pool co in town I can trust.
Install cost was around $ 300. And he had to swap the inlet/outlet headers to the opposite side.

I think PBs are still charging the 100% markup like they got away with 10 years ago when online shopping with free/low shipping was nothing compared to today. More and more of them are panning the build around it and losing that part of the job.

They probably still fool many people, but as the millennials take over little by little, they price check EVERYTHING and the model won’t be sustainable. The rest of us that are a tad older are getting more and more used to looking everything up also.

Thanks for all the replies. PB hasn't responded with the cost breakdown yet. You all confirmed my suspension. Took some pics of the set up. Electrical looks to be ready to go. Gas just needs to be hooked up but I need to figure out where to cut into the plumbing. Thinking about doing myself given how easy this appears. Take a look at the pics and let me know your thoughts.

Your setup looks identical to mine (check out my sigline pics). Can you show a wider shot of the pad? Looks like you are able to bypass the SWG if desired? Your gas is there just needs final hookup. Personally I would go with that link above where it includes installation.

I also see that you have the FushionSoft (also like me). This is a great SWCG just make sure you never install the mineral cartridge. If one was included, throw it on ebay and sell it.

Please fill out your sigline with your pool details!

Yes looks like we have a very similar setup.

I sent that company and email to see if they install near me. I didn't see anything about their install/service area. If they can do it I am most likely going with them. Great price.

Already grabbed the mineral cartridge from the PB boxes in the garage so they don't "accidentally" install if for me.

Updated profile with pool details, we're still under construction.

As Allen mentioned Jandy is not DIY friendly. My experience with their equipment has been that it is pretty good quality equipment but they just don't want DIY or internet sales. So if you plan to install a heater (or any other equipment) for DIY rest assured other brands will work fine with your existing RS automation. If you do a lot of DIY you should consider migrating to a more DIY friendly brand. Raypak is made by Rheem and has a great reputation here. Pentair, Hayward also have lots of installs. I'm keeping my old Jandy Jxi heater since I'm way past the warranty period anyway and parts are still available for it. The only difference for your mixed manufacturer heater install is the way it's controlled. Heaters can be controlled 3 ways Manual, Automation using their proprietary RS 485 communication, fireman's switch. Manual control requires you manipulate spa/pool/temp settings at the heater. Automation allows you to do it with the app or remote controller. There are two ways to communicate with the heater. First you can use the proprietary RS 485 protocol but this only communicates with that brand's equipment. Second you can use the fireman's switch method. This process is very simple and probably the most common way heaters are controlled anyway. Your Jandy RS automation can control the heater either way. You essentially set the heater to max temp at the heater control panel. Then the automation monitors water temp and your setting. Then any time the pool's below setting it turns your heater on. When it reaches set point it turns the heater off. The heater doesn't do any control in this mode it just turns on and off when told to.

I hope this helps.

In my previous post I assumed you'd change brands. For the monumental install cost you're facing if you've already purchased I'd return it if possible and if not get a gas plumber to hook it up then do the plumbing and control yourself or get a pool service to do the install.

Haven't purchased anything yet. Hopefully betterbuypoolsupply.com can install in my area. Thanks again for the info.

They're in California. How are they going to install anything in Maryland?

I would be cautious about this seller.

Do they even have a business license?

Looks like they are aka Aquaduck pools.

Aka Specialized pools.

Pass.

I assumed they find a local installer to subcontract. That would be a helpful service to many folks.
