**The Quote(s) Stage of Building My Fiberglass Pool**

@alvindo @newdude

Just got done with the pool builder & finalized the specs. In terms of attempting to upsize the filter, he said, “you can’t read everything you read on the internet,” and advised me that I would be just fine with the Hayward SwimClear 225 Sq. Ft. Cartridge. My intention was to shoot for the stars & go with the 725 Sq. Ft. version. Thoughts?

Our specs are as follows:

Pool = Latham Fiberglass Olympia 16 (15,200 gallons)

Filter = Cartridge - Hayward SwimClear 225 Sq. Ft.

Pump = Hayward TriStar VS 900 (1.85 HP)
- Hopefully, I won’t regret getting the 2.7 HP version.

Sanitization = Hayward Salt System w/ TurboCell S3 (40k Gallon)

Automation = Hayward OmniPL

Lights = (4) ColorLogic 2.0 12v lights. He recommended against the 4.0’s because if something goes wrong, that’s 120v current in the pool.

Heater = Hayward HC Series (400k). Builder swears this is overkill and recommended the 250k, but I didn’t budge.

Safety Cover = CoverStar 500P Lite Duty Solid Cover

Stamped Concrete around the pool, and a patio area. Says it’ll be “1 truck full of cement.”

In all, $62,800.

IMO your yard determines your filter need, not the pool size.

Gallons is mostly depth related, when surface area of the hole in the ground sucking up yard crud is a much bigger factor.

Put a tiny pool under 2 oak trees ? You'll need a giant filter for 5k gallons. :ROFLMAO:
Here’s the yard. 90’ x 40’. No trees. Deck will be deleted.IMG_7084.jpegIMG_7085.jpegIMG_7086.jpegIMG_7087.jpegIMG_7088.jpeg

No trees.
Lots of trees. Pollen and crud blow pretty far. The bulk of heavier stuff will likely drop before your fence so that will help some at least.

I'd go with 400 sq ft carts. 300 would work fine but it's a small cost to upgrade when spread over the generation it will last. It's peanuts in the grand scheme of your build.

Going with the SwimClear 425 Sq. Ft!

I definitely agree the yard makes or breaks the filter. I have a 340 sq ft and it does me great. But I also run a Polaris robot every 2-3 days and spot vacuum with the pool blaster every day. Maybe if I didn’t run the robot and spot vac,I’d be less happy with the filter size.

Thanks for everyone’s responses. The more I watch YouTube, the more I’m subscribing to the, “bigger is better,” mentality, in terms of filter size.

I don’t wanna be a pain the the behind to the pool builder with changing things like every other day; but boy am I fantasizing about the 725 Sq. Ft. Cartridge!

Before committing check out the price of a new set of cartridges. They have gone up a lot the past few years. They need to be replaced every 2-4 years.

Get it right, no matter what. You are paying out the wazoo and need to get it right for *you* and your funding.

Forget how inconvenienced everybody is. In short time they'll be long gone and you'll be inconvenienced for a generation or two.

Also, 725s would be overkill. We recommend yearly cleanings to ensure everything is working / seated properly. Anything larger than that is just a waste. 300s/400s are probably too close to call before hand if the 300s would go all year, but 700s are a waste for you. :ROFLMAO:

So it sounds like the 425 sq ft cart’s would be perfect!

Neither. Its a redundant device when you already get a measurement.

Take MPH and KPH. It doesnt matter how you judge your speed (flow), it is excatly whatever it is and what you call it doesnt change your actual speed. Your pump already reads RPM and to use GPM you will then need to go adjust the RPM anyway. Just adjust the RPM until the SWG/heater comes on, the cleaner works well, the waterfalls are gushing, etc.

I know all my needs in RPM and have never once needed to figure out GPM.

This is the finalized equipment list. When my builder sent my equipment list to the Hayward rep, the rep essentially said that there’s extra equipment on there that I’d be double paying for. Waiting for clarification on exactly what that may be. For all you Hayward guru’s, can you chime in?

Pool Type: Latham Olympia 16 Pool Size: 16’x35’ Depth: 3’6” to 6’6” Return Lines : 4 Skimmers : 2

Filter : Hayward SwimClear Cartridge Filter (Model # C4030)

Pump: Hayward TriStar VS 950 (Model # HL32950VSP)
*Ensure the pump comes with the Omni® Wired Wall-Mount Touchscreen Remote.
If not, the part # needed is Model # HLWALLMOUNT.

Sanitization : Hayward Saltwater System w/ Hayward TurboCell S3 (40k Gallon Version , Model # TCELLS340)

Automation : Hayward OmniPL - 4 Relay, Salt Ready w/ App (Model # HLPRO4SW)

You do not need - Sanitization : Hayward Saltwater System w/ Hayward TurboCell S3 (40k Gallon Version , Model # TCELLS340)

All that is integrated and bundled in - Automation : Hayward OmniPL - 4 Relay, Salt Ready w/ App (Model # HLPRO4SW) - if you get the HLPLUS4W, not the HLPRO4SW,

I also don't think you need - Hayward Salt Plumbing Kit (Model # P-KIT)

Do you guys know if the TriStar VS 950 comes with one of the touchscreen remotes? Or maybe the HLPLUSW comes with it?

The OmniPL HLPLUSW has a touch screen control panel at the equipment pad.

I don’t know if that is the touchscreen remote you are asking about.

I am being told that the 400k BTU heater will be overkill for my 15k gallon pool. They're saying that it will short cycle and lead to premature failure. They are recommending i go with a 250k rather than 400k, which would also need upgraded gas line/risers (additional cost). Thoughts?

A 400K BTU heater will heat a 15K pool 2.5 degrees an hour. A 1 degree temperature rise will take close to 30 minutes.

What do "they" think a short cycle is? What is the minimum cycle time?

You will not find any warnings about short cycling in the Installation Manual.

Short cycling can be a problem with heaters in a house. It is nonsense for a pool heater.
