Pool Style Chlorine Eliminator

I made the rookie mistake of not turning down the salt cell chlorinator percentage (set at 25%) after putting a solar pool cover over the pool. The cover actually only covers about 75% of the pool, and the chlorine level was way low when I put it on, so I figured "how much of a difference can a cover make?". Well, a lot! The chlorine dipstick was a deep purple when I checked it a few days later. I turned the chlorinator off and removed the cover and 12 hours later I took a sample to the local pool supply company and had them re-check it. They said the chlorine level was still reading higher than their reader goes. They thought the chlorine was probably 10ppm. We have a 22,000 gallon pool. I added 48 ounces of "Pool Style Chlorine Eliminator" and 30 minutes later the dipstick still shows a high chlorine level.

Does anyone know how long it should take for the chlorine eliminator to work? Wondering if I should go ahead and add more chlorine eliminator, or just give it more time.

Thanks!

Sorry to say, but the chlorine eliminator was a waste of money. If you just leave the cover off for a few days it’ll come down on its own. I’d get your own test kit (a TF-100 or a Taylor K2006C) and do your own test. The pool store testing is notoriously unreliable and often times geared to get you to buy stuff you don’t need. The two kits above will test well above 10ppm. If you read through the pool school articles on this site and want to follow the TFP pool care method, feel free to ask questions.

But 10ppm may not be that high depending on what your CYA level is. Have a read through this to see what I mean:

Thanks for the quick responses! I'll definitely get one of those pool test kits and review the chlorine/CYA article. This is my first full season, so still lots to learn!

I should have added that the little nephews are coming in town tomorrow for Easter weekend and of course wanted to swim, so that's part of the reason I went with the eliminator rather than the sunshine method!

10ppm is safe to swim either way unless you have absolutely no stabilizer in the water (and you probably do). Anything up to the SLAM level of chlorine is safe for swimming. Depending on how you’ve been chlorinating the water, 10ppm may not be enough chlorine to be sanitary (ie if you’ve been using trichlor for a whole season)

OH YEAH! So glad to hear. NOW make sure you have some liquid chlorine to add to the pool right after they leave to help with anything left behind if you know what I mean

It is a wise move to boost the FC to just under SLAM level for your CYA before you have people over to swim especially if they are kids.
