I think the BEST pool to have the best of all worlds is the L shaped pool!
The "foot" is the shallow area with a depth of 4' and ledge at the toes area. This area is for active games like volley ball and Watermelon Ball!.
The "leg" part is the "deep" end. I would do at least 6' deep as that the shallowest you can safely to a cannon ball.
If you can't fit a L shaped pool then for a rectangle pool that is 4' to 6' with a clearly defined are for cannon balls!
