Is it more economical to leave the pool heater on all the time or only when you want to swim?

This depends on what kind of heater you have. A heat pump is usually left on all the time. A gas heater is usually on-demand. I turn off my gas heater when we will not be swimming for more than a day. If you are up to the extra work, a solar bubble-style cover makes a big difference in nightly heat losses meaning your heater doesn't have to run as often. But it is a PITA to take on and off every night. My gas heater gets 1-2 degrees per hour.

Welcome to TFP.

It is more economical to heat the pool on demand when you want it heated and let the water cool when not being used. That’s assuming the time to heat is adequate for you.

Heating continuously to maintain a water temperature will waste BTUs and energy as heat is lost to the air temperature and evaporation.

What he said. It all depends on the type of heater as well as how often you are in the pool.

Bubble covers will cut down on overnight heat loss dramatically and can save you over 50% in energy costs compared to a none cover pool

If you have solar heater panels they should be on automation to run whenever the sun is out.
