Hayward Tristar VS 950 VSP, 2.7HP

Hello to all,

Has anyone installed the Hayward Tristar VS 950 VSP that is 2.7HP, and if so, how long ago? I would also like to know how it is performing?

There are a lot of reviews for the Tristar VSP 900 that has 1.85HP, but I virtually cannot locate anything on the 2.7HP VSP version. I even googled Amazon on the Tristar VS 950 VSP, 2.7HP, and it provides reviews, but they are all 100% on the 1.85HP. I contacted my Hayward regional rep [a pretty good guy too] and asked him about references on the Tristar 2.7HP. He suggested I get a single speed pump? He knows what I have been through w the EcoStar VSP3400 and preferred I stay away from VSP's. The cost of running a single speed at 3450RPM is not cheap, nor the lower speed of the 2 speeds at 1750RPM's. Therefore, I am seeking anyone's direct experience w the Tristar 950 VSP and your results.

It looks like I have that pump. I've only been running it about month and this is my first experience with a pool pump since I was a kid and we had a single speed. If you have any specific questions I'll try to answer. Some basic details; I run it at 60% speed for general filtration/skimming and 95% for spa jets or spa spillover.

You are very close in the Fort Bend Country area from your pool build info...I'd like to know [via PM] your pool builder and their long-term experience w this pump if possible. I'll send you a private message - good luck w your pump.

I have that pump for our new pool finished in October. It's been great, but last weekend it shut off while changing from Spa back to Pool mode on our Prologic. A tech came out (under warranty) and found a short at the terminal where the hot wire enters the pump. He said its a common failure if things aren't tightened down correctly. We're back up and running now. So far (other than that) so good. Quiet, nice amount of control, uses very little electricity.

Good deal Moon...I'm glad to hear it's running well for you. A qk fix electrical short is something that I could live w bc it's an exception and easily identified and fixed. What type of breaker is supporting your Tristar filter pump? It is the only device on that breaker? Hopefully so...thanks and good luck, tstex

I believe mine is on a 20 amp breaker, it's dedicated to the pump. Both my pumps are on 20 amp breakers for that matter. I should also say that at 60% it's pretty quiet. Our pad is only 10' from the outdoor kitchen, behind a cedar fence, and it's not distracting at all. If you listen for it you'll hear it, but if you're having a conversation you'll forget it's on. At 95% that's another matter

Actually, I believe both my pump and heater are on the same breaker on the Prologic panel... but I'll have to double check.

I'm not upset about the short. Things happen, especially with so many working parts during a new pool install. As long as it's fixed I'm all good.
