i have an in ground pool and every couple years by Hayward S244T tank cracks and then leaks water. I was reading reviews and it seems like its a problem with this model that the tanks seams are weak. What sand filter is better/upgraded compared to the 244T that I can replace it with. Ive had two tanks break every 2 years and i wanna find a better brand of sand filter that will easily replacement my s244t

thanks

I (and thousands of others) have the Hayward S244T filter and have no such problem. I suspect there's something about the installation that's causing this. What exactly is cracking? The tank bowl? The tank neck? The drain?

Though I am not a fan of the product, there are many thousands in service without issue.

I’m interested in OP entire equipment pad.

(One of the big 3 had a sand tank problem 2 years ago, the tank could not handle the VS out of the box priming mode. Issue resolved)

The tank doesn't do well with high pressure.

What pump do you have?

What is the maximum pressure that you put on the filter?

hey thanks for the reply! the pump is the super 2 and i believe the filter pressure ranges between 22lb and 30lb

here is my setup

That pump is way too big for the filter. I would suggest that you downsize the pump as much as possible unless you need a high flow rate for some reason.

If you want to keep the current pump, I would suggest that you get a Pentair TR-140 sand filter or a 400 square foot cartridge filter.

You can downsize the pump capacity by replacing the impeller with a smaller impeller.

James,

What is the maximum pressure you like to see on the Hayward sand filters? They claim they're good for 50 psi but it's sounding like not for long.

In my opinion, anything over 15 psi is going to significantly reduce the life of the filter.

Watch any filter when the pump is first turned on and you will see the filter swell up.

Repeated cycling under excessive pressure can create permanent deformations in the structural integrity of the filter.

At about 30 psi, the filter life will be extremely diminished and, in my opinion, unsafe.

wow thanks a lot for the info James! i’ll look into that. what setup are you using btw? and should i go for a 1HP pump then?

It looks like a brand new pump. How old is it?

It looks like you have a SP3015X20AZ pump with a SPX3016C impeller, a SPX3021B diffuser and a SPX3021R wear ring.

That pump is way too strong for a residential pool.

If you want to downgrade the pump performance, you can replace the following parts:

Impeller....SPX3007C

Diffuser....SPX3000BN

Wear ring...SPX3005R

Also, I suspect that the leak is probably along the underside of the lip where the multiport attaches.

That’s what usually cracks on those tanks.

thanks a ton for the info! so once i swap out these parts on the pump, i should get lower pressure in the s244t which would make it last longer? cuz then the pressure should stay below 20 i assume?

yeah the old pump went out, so just got this a couple months ago i believe. same one as last time

Replacing the impeller with the smaller one will significantly reduce the flow and pressure.

Your pressure should drop to about 10 psi.

At that pressure, the filter should last at least 10 years.
