Hayward Ecostar SP3400VSP error pump stalled

My pool pump stopped working the other day, when I went to look at it, saw the error message on the display "error pump stalled". I have power cycled the unit and shut power off for over 24 hours and still get the message.

I disconnected the motor from power and took it apart to verify the impeller was still spinning freely. There are three jumpers (black, red, blue) that connect the motor to the drive board. What I found was that with these disconnected, the impeller spins freely. Once I connect the drive board back to the motor the impeller catches and will not spin freely.

Any suggestions are appreciated.

Welcome to TFP.

Congratulations on getting the life you did from your Ecostar pump. That pump has been a lemon in Hawyards pump lineup.

We have seen that failure for the EcoStar many times in the past couple of years. The control head dies. You can replace the control head but it is almost the same price as the whole pump. There are plenty of threads about it, but not solutions.

Let's see what the latest suggestions @1poolman1 have about this problem.

Welcome to TFP!

Make sure you totaly disconnect power to the unit before working on it.

The Echostar has had problems for years. I had one for 9 years before it gave out - I consider myself lucky it lasted that long. My neighbor had one for 4 years before he got the drive error. Others haven't made it to 4 years. I replaced mine with a Tristar 950.

Cut your losses and buy another VS pump. Pentair or Hayward - unless you already have Hayward automation, then Hayward.

Tell us a bit more about your pool by filling out your signature. Include info on your pool, pool equipment (including manufacturers and model numbers) and test kit info. See mine and others signatures for inspiration.

The motor is acting correctly when the drive is connected and then disconnected. From the Hayward troubleshooting guide regarding that message:
"Check impeller and motor shaft for freedom of movement. If free, remove the Blue, Black, and Red wires from the drive and check each motor lead to ground. There should be no continuity. Next, check continuity from lead to lead. Ohms reading should be between 0.5 and 1.0 ohms max. If any of these readings are outside limits, replace motor. If they are within range, replace drive."

EcoStars had a problem with their drives. Hayward would extend the warranty for about 3 years beyond the written warranty. I got a good one, still going after 15 years.
