The use/purpose may impact your decision. We had a natural gas line and ring put in and could never get the flames like we wanted (always bluish) and it never produced the heat or feel of a natural fire so we went to wood. Ours is off the back and more of a purpose firepit (campfire/smores/weenie roast) than decorative, though. Either way, if you want the look feel of a natural fire- check with builders about the gas and type so you can ensure you'll get the look you want.
