Our pool drops to about 45-50 degree water temps at the coldest points throughout winter. It's too cost prohibitive for us to keep it at or above 60-65 degrees which from my understanding is the low side "safe temp" to fire up a gas pool heater. From my understanding it is also a good practice to fire the heater regularly...which I do in summer time at least every few weeks just to keep it all running and keep eye out for any issues.

Those of you that don't heat the pool all winter....do you guys fire it up for a bit even though the water is colder than recommended or just let sit until spring/summer and never fire the heater when water is too cold?

Thank you. This is what I read previously...I don't know if it's better to just leave off until Spring or fire up a couple times and let it run for 30 minutes or fire up a couple times and let it go to 50-60 degrees then shut off for another month or?

Thank you guys. Sorry to overthink it. It's an expensive part of the pool that's older and I'm hoping to do whatever I can to prolong the life of the equipment & run as efficient/cost effective as possible in all facets of the pool/landscape/lighting maintenance.

I never fire mine up in the winter. Considering that the air temp last week was -6F during the day, and -18F overnight, if I had, I would not be listed among my most energy efficient neighbors....
