Effect of Bioguard sticks / hth pucks

I have found these two buckets (quarter full) of chlorine products from the previous owner. They have been sitting in the shed for the last 5 years. Now I want to put them to good use if I can

1. Bioguard smart silk guard sticks (bluish color)
2. Hth 3” chlorinating pucks. Says 100% trichloro, 90% available chlorine

I suspect both of these are stabilized chlorine products. Though I cannot tell how much CYA they contain.

I use SWCG and currently i am at 30. I need to raise it to 60ppm anyways so I don’t mind the addition of CYA from these products.

I just want to be able to make an educated guess on the effect of one tab on my 100K litre pool.

Assuming these are still effective after so many years in the shed, how much cya do they contain ?

Dump the sticks….they contain copper.

The HTH tablets will increase CYA roughly 1 ppm per each tablet in your pool.

Check for copper sulfate. It’s an Algaecide. Long term use can lead to copper buildup and staining.

If they don't disclose ingredients in the SDS, and show "proprietary" avoid those products...often times the "proprietary" ingredient is not good for the pool. If you don't know the ingredients, don't add it to the pool.

Hmmm
BioGuard SilkGuard "Complete" Sticks - specifically mentiones copper sulfate as an ingredient
BioGuard SilGuard Sticks - no mention of ingredients :( But it does say "metal stain inhibitor, scaler preventer, and water softening"

I wonder if the use of copper sulfate is with the new "Complete" formulate which adds the algecide. Their description on the bucket separates sanitizer / shock / algecides... I suspect at the time, they had 3 separate products for 3 purposes.

There are probabaly 15 sticks left. Do you see any harm in using them all ? (Assuming they have copper in it) ?

I would not put them in my pool. I would not recommend anyone put them in their pool. We (TFP) would not recommend using them. The pool is yours to do as you see fit.
