19k gallon pool and pool place says 25 pounds of shock!!

Well if you polled me, I would say yes. The 25lbs added FC of 123. The maximum recommended FC level is 20 for a pool with CYA of 50, so that is 6 times the amount and can cause damage to equipment, liners, etc.

If you include pool store employees in the poll, no telling what the results would be. I've never seen a group of "professionals" have so much bad information or just make stuff up for a sale. Yesterday someone reported that the pool store told them their chlorine level will give their daughters UTIs

If you are saying you have a TF100, that will get you all of the readings needed except for salt. That kit can be purchased separately here:
Lol, maybe lol levels of chlorine n a gross pool might?

It's for ALL readers. You'd be surprised how many don't see the big picture, or have a momentary lapse in judgement. :)
Oh I totally agree. The same guy who sold my mother in law was 1 of 4 or 5 techs at the desk and I just happened to get him. He might have had a case of short man syndrome cuz he was rude and argumentative as can be. The fact he told me I might need another 25 lbs of shock because it was still cloudy is ridiculous!! Wait I take that back, first 25 was ridiculous, not sure if there is a word for extra 25...

Can someone tell me what I am missing?
What you are missing is the pool store shouldn't be trusted - period, full stop.

What exact test kit do you have?
If these are separate pools that more than one person is going to test, get another test kit for the other pool. Teach the other person how to test, what to do and to NOT go to the PS for advice or tests.

In MA, with your relatively short season, you may get away using tabs. The preferred method is either liquid chlorine or a SWG.

Oh believe me I didn't trust them as soon as I heard what they told my mother in law, there's another place I go to a decent amount and I feel they aren't too bad depending on person you get. I thinks it's TF kits, I have had it for a while and even tho I am good at math seems like a pain to calculate etc but by the sounds of it from all of you I should suck it up n do it.

Check the expiration dates. It may be time.

There's an app for that. ;)

Upgrade to premium for $8, *yearly*. You can save all your history and we can see it too. Help us help you. AND with premium you can log multiple pools, which is a concern. Anyway. The app is amazing and couldn't be easier.

You are the biggest obstacle. The testing and the pool math app are stupid easy. But you think it's hard, so, it's scary.

We'll help. Around the clock if need be. :)

OMG this place is horrible. Managers both were completely disrespectful to me, yelled at me, laughed in my face, called me a liar about getting my pool clean so quickly. Attached are the results I got from another place but they were about the same from this awful place. The place where the picture is from said their software only goes to 15 on paperwork but it calculated free chlorine at 21! Am I being unreasonable saying this high level of chlorine is bad for the pool?

So the pool is mostly clear now and her liner looks destroyed!! If anyone could comment on the above question about having FC at 21. I know the answer but like to see professional advice. Thanks!

Certainly not professional advice, but I know TFP methods are designed to kill algae while not impacting equipment and has tens of thousands of people using this advice without harm.

Obviously, the pool store's 25lbs of shock blew way past SLAM levels and damaged the liner.

Also not professional advice, but I would do the following if I were in your shoes:
1. Present the facts to the store and give them your demands (new liner, new liner prorated cost based on the age of the old one, etc.).
2. If their response is not adequate, determine how strongly you can prove they gave her the advice of 25lbs.
3. If you can prove they gave that advice, call the liner company and verify that those levels would damage their liner
4. Get a lawyer or explore small claims court

Good luck

60% of a CYA level is safe for 24 hours, and however long it takes to drift down on its own. FC burns off so quickly at 60% that it takes active work dosing every hour to maintain it, so it doesn't stay there for long.

But 123 ppm FC was added, per the pool store advice, (308% ? If the CYA was actually a 40), and the results are what you see.
