If you care about the environment, you must already have figured out a good leaf skimmer net replacement source.
I care - but I haven't found a good source of inexpensive yet durable replacement netting yet.
Have you?

I have to do a warranty replacement on my net. The plastic rim that holds the net onto the metal frame has cracked all the way through. I’ll see how they do … it’s less than 2 years old.

I also don’t really like their telescoping pole. The mechanism is fine but when it’s extended it feels flimsy like it’s going to snap in half if I pull up too hard on it. They’re nice products with (hopefully) a good/easy warranty process but I have older poles (11 years) that just feel sturdier and better made. And my original leaf net (some generic brand the builder left me) lasted over 5 seasons before ever having an issue.

It could just be the cost of living in a desert where nothing survives staying outdoors but I’m not convinced that ProTuff price-for-quality is worth it.

I keep my nets in my shed out of the sun. My long pole has to stay outside which doesn't hurt it but it's very hot when I first grab it. I have a primary net now that fits in the shed, net and handle together. My nets generally last 3-5 years and they aren't any special brand.

+1. I'm disappointed in the pole. It's very heavy yet very flimsy. That stress can't be good for the locking mechanism which I do love, as long as it lasts.

I love the pole and did one mechanism change but it does get heavy use. This is the only pole that hasn't collapsed suddenly while working it hard and losing my balance at the pools edge. More then once giving it all I got when (other) the pole suddenly doesn't hold like when using the whale brush with "mucho" resistance and then you find yourself trying not to fall into the water.

Love my WallWhale Original brush!! That thing has gone the distance. Just got rid of my original one that cracked after 11 seasons. Bought a new one. The nylon/steel brushes only last 2-3 seasons out in the sun here but the WallWhale attachment quickly and easily swaps on to any new brush. I also have a regular brush with no fin attachment on it and I can’t understand how any regular brush can do any good without the Whale tail.

Anyway, time will tell on the ProTuff. I’ll be doing my warranty request tomorrow. We’ll see if they are as hassle-free as they claim.

Pentair R121196 Skimmer net has been replaceable for years. Although I don’t like that it doesn’t hold much volume compared to an actual leaf rake. Pentair R121230 leaf rake is also a replaceable option.

They were great with warranty hands down but I lost time as I needed to find my paperwork because like everything out there if you don't register when get it when it comes to warranty that's when the paper trail begins and will slow the process down. I just went back in my Amazon purchases and screenshot that to them which was more then enough to get the ball rolling. Ten days later I had the replacement parts.

The ProTuff nets are now modular, so they can do warranty replacements (always free forever, for non-commercial users) of just the netting if necessary: Troubleshooting Your ProTuff Net : ProTuff Pool Equipment
Oooh. I like it. Thank you for that idea as I didn't know anyone sold a modular-replaceable net (let alone one that can be replaced under warranty!).

Apparently you can replace the following parts, which is a boon to the environment!
  • multipart handle
  • metal rim
  • plastic rim clip
  • net
I didn't know about that ProTuff net company as most of my equipment is from Leslies (but they sell expensive cheap garbage as far as I can tell). I read the plain English warranty which says you don't even have to prove something broke (which I find odd, as normally you'd at least send a photo like I did with my Jandy valve).

But one question, since I expect every net to fail, is whether you can get the warranty twice or three times?
If it failed once (which it will), it will also fail twice (which it will) and it will also fail three times (which it will).

Given every skimmer/leaf net will constantly fail, has anyone here ever gotten that warranty more than once on a single purchase? When I looked up the MSRP $60 retail price for the Pro-Tuff Pool Leaf Rake, I saw that they say "Unlimited free replacements". Also they say "Unlimited Free Replacements for Life" on this web page so I'll believe it.

Given it's only twice as much as the garbage at Leslies, and given it can last a lifetime with the warranty used multiple times, the only worry is whether it fits a "normal" pole (of which I have plenty).

It seems that it will fit a normal telescoping pole based on looking at it (although I use stainless steel bolts with a wing nut instead of those ubiquitous garbage plastic V clips).

I have already done two replacements on my ProTuff net. Both completely hassle free. Also one replacement on the brush. The company stands behind their products.
I didn't post it originally, but I have the same problem with the stainless steel bristle brushes (the non-steel brushes fall apart even sooner).

Is there a particular ProTuff steel brush you recommend?
(I need both the small 3 or 4 inch steel and larger 18-inch steel sizes.)

Also, do they sell a manual vacuum that doesn't also fall apart?

I have the protuff pole and the brush, purchased a year ago. I like the pole, doesn't seem flimsy to me...YMMV. The locking mechanism has "stuck" a couple times, cleared easily once, no so easy the other time. Glad it doesn't do it consistently and often. The only other nit, is the when you collapse it, the outer sheath can travel past the last stop and bump the rubber grip off the inner tube.

The brush is well made, but very stiff. I wish the bristles had a bit more flex. I'd buy the pole again, likely wouldn't buy the brush again. When my net dies, I will try the protuff net..

I've had the same problem when the pole is extended to the max when done it refuses to release, that's when I filed for warranty but then it happened with the new one too. This time when it refused to release I had no choice but to grab my screw driver and remove so I can transport it. As soon as I began reversing the screw it released so I just left both screws just shy of bottoming out and it hasn't happened again.

It happened in the first couple uses, and hasn't happened again. A bit of "wear in?" Either way, I'll remember this if it happens again! Thanks!
