"No Diving" Stickers - Required?

We have a "sport bottom" inground that is 3.5' at each end and 6' in the middle that we installed this year. I need to get final signoff from the building inspector, but can't find anything in the ISPSC that requires stickers. The pool manufacturer sent some, just not sure if I have to use them and if so if there are guidelines on where they'd go.

N,

Does the building inspector want them? I doubt he does, as this is a residential pool.

I have never heard of them being a requirement.

Thanks,

Jim R.

He hasn't mentioned them in any of his visits. I know I could simply ask him, but I'm slightly concerned I get a "Well, they're not required but they're a good idea" response.

If he asks, you can pull them out because you 'wanted his guidance on where they should go' ;) ;)

Generally access and signage concerns are codified for public pools, access concerns are codified for residential pools and your insurance agent would like you to plaster your residential pool with everything under the sun for their CYA purposes. “Good idea although not required” responses are lawyer speak for CYA. Check your codes, what’s in writing is the law and nothing else regardless of “its a good idea responses“.

What's in writing is subject to interpretation.

My guy had three 'I really like to see' things that weren't code. I looked at him with a blank stare each time until I realized he was not going to move past it.

We could have argued and I would have lost. Maybe I would have won an appeal down the road, and been awarded my $600 permit extension back. Also maybe not, and definitely no time soon.

For example, my code clearly stated I needed a door alarm, which I had. The inspector said because I had a screen door, it would need it's own alarm so that we could use it in the summertime as the primary door. Not one word of that was mentioned in the code, but it's how he interpretated it. Another inspector may not have considered the screen door an acceptable barrier to need its own alarm. It's all in who you're talking to, and what mood they're in that day.

Your local residential code might or might not require such signage.

The pool or liner manufacturer might say that it “Required”, but that is not law unless the local code specifies that all manufacturer’s installation requirements must be followed.

If you don’t want the signs, you can just wait to see if the inspector says anything and apply them if the inspector says that they are required.

For sure there are nuances open to interpretation, but usually the code is fairly clear as to the requirement. For instance in your case code dictated an alarm. The specificity of the type of alarm or installation method was clearly open to interpretation. But there was no doubt by code you needed an alarm.

The code speak I’m most familiar with for signage would state:

“Depth markers shall indicate pool depth in either feet, feet and inches, or feet and fractions of a foot, and shall be of a color that contrasts with the background. Numerals indicating depth shall be a minimum of 4 inches high.

In shallow areas, "no diving" markers or symbols at least 4 inches high shall be located at not more than 25 foot intervals around the pool perimeter except at a zero-depth edge.”

…….there’s no doubt in the example that by code for that public facility signs are needed. Interpretation would be open as to what color the 4 inch letters need to be to be compliant, but the code is clear that they are needed.

Inspectors are like being married. You can be right, or you can be happy. :ROFLMAO:

All I'm saying is that it's not wise to argue with the inspector. Chances are, they'll find something else to fail you, be it subjective or clear cut. (y)

That's my thinking as well. I GC'd the build of our house, so I know the inspector well. He's a good guy, but definitely of the "no such thing as too safe" school (nothing wrong with that, he has to cover his Rear AND the town's, so I get it). So I'd rather not open the can of worms unless necessary.

So where I am code required every door I have that has "access" to the pool have an alarm. I thought they were the same as my house alarm and they just did a beep beep every time the door opened (unless armed). No these &^%**!# things sound like a fire alarm and dont shut up until the door closes. On top of this I have 5 doors that lead to the pool. Once I have my final they are coming off and being thrown in the garbage. I think its more for the rental houses, but I guess they're not allowed or dont want to discriminate against whether I use the house just for immediate family or rent it out.

So if you ask and he wants them, put them on and if you dont like them take them off after final.
