Why do most pool pads have gravel or rocks around them?

This was a question that a new lawn care fellow asked me. It's a good question, as I do not know. I presume it would be related to aesthetics?

Welcome comments, thoughts and other pictures!

OR,

Not sure about 'most' but I have gravel around mine so that water has a place to go when I drain the filter or open the pump lid. Also, only an idiot would bring plumbing up through the concrete. This just makes things next to impossible to repair, when the plumbing needs to be worked on in the future..

Thanks,

Jim R.

Drainage and access to pipes.

Mud - as noted, sometimes a fair amount of water in the area due to maintenance. Easy for grass to turn to mud. With a good layer of gravel for drainage, many times one can even kneel on a recently flooded surface and get minimally wet.

When I redid my pool deck, I replaced the lines and just have the lines poke through sleeved openings in the slab under the pavers (pavers are set on a inch or so of sand).

With the pavers and slab pitched well I have not had any water issues when doing any service on the pool equipment or with rain. Maintaining the polymetric sand in between the pavers limits how much water gets between the slab and pavers. There are a few holes in the slab to all the water to drain, but most runs run off the top or out the edges.

Also figuring I should not have to touch the lines in my time. If I do, breaking up the concrete isn't that bad and I can fill back in stone or concrete.

In my case having something under the equipment other than pavers would not look as nice. I do plan to build a shed over and around the equipment to make it look a little nicer, keep the weather off the equipment, and to be able to store some things.
