what's the process of removing a pool

First Check with your local municipality about requirements- some have many & some have none. In Cali I’d venture to say there are probably some regulations.

It’s going to cost you a significant amount of money but hard to estimate without knowing sizes and what’s there. In CA, the demolition and fill in for a swimming pool requires a permit and inspections for the work. You will be required to drain the pool, cap all underground piping, especially gas, ensure that the shell is either demolished or has enough drainage holes in it to support the exiting ground water flow. All equipment will have to be removed and the structure will need to be filled and compacted. Some areas require specific fill material AND a certified compaction report by a geotechnical engineer. You will also have to amend/update the platt map for your property to show that the pool was removed.

It’s generally not worth removing an inground pool as it will impact the resale value of the property. A lot of people will be hesitant to buy a home knowing that there is something abandoned and buried in the backyard. And given the requirements in CA, disclosure is required and potentially very costly if you try to avoid it.

Thank you all for the information. Didn't realize that would be this much work
Added my pool info in the signature zone.

if demolishing is not worthwhile, do you think resurfacing the pool and removing/plugging the pop up care taker system worth a try ?
I use robot anyway. Any idea of the cost in Nor Cal area ?

Many thanks !

Does your pool have wall returns separate from the in-floor cleaning system pop up heads or is the in-floor system the only way water is returned to the pool?

If the in-floor system has leaks, then you can certainly abandon them (they just remove everything and fill the line with hydraulic cement) BUT ONLY IF there is another way for water to be returned to the pool. Unfortunately we do see a fair number of pools around here built with only in-floor returns and that becomes very problematic when there is a leak.

As far as cost we can't really help you too much unless there is someone in your area that has had the work done. Prices are very different from area to area. One good example is Huston, TX. If you are "inside the circle" you pay a bit lower price for services. If you are "outside the circle" then you pay more due to travel distance.

What we suggest is to get at least 3 quotes (5 if you can). Share them here so we can help you look them over.
