I have to replace my sand filter, I don't know what size it is (came with the house). I have a 24ft round 52 inch tall hard sided doughboy above ground pool. Approx 14,000 gallons. My pump is 1.5 hp waterway single speed. I am seeing a wide variety of recommendations. I would like to run my pump 8-12 hrs a day. I will include pictures for reference. Also I did struggle with Algae last summer many days above 110° and have switched the sand to glass media which I plan to use in new filter.

Hey HH and Welcome !!!

A larger filter needs cleaning less often. No more, no less. If you're good with the intervals yours needed cleaning, get the same size. (It looks like a smaller one.... 16 inch maybe?) Or go bigger to reduce the frequency proportionately.

Algae is *always* a chemical problem and has zero to do with the filter.

Sand is best in a sand filter. The best any alternative media can say is that it works as good as sand. Here is one of our members sand filter in action, combined with trouble free poolcare :

They claim they can do better. I claim BS. Lol.

Is anything broken about your filter or are you replacing it because of the algae?

Filter is about 8 years old and cracked at the outlet valve. I figured it was a good idea to replace the entire thing versus trying to find parts since brand isn't written anywhere and it might be close to end of life. I read that you have to have a big enough filter for pump size or it could damage pump. What is big enough for 1.5 hp pump?

The MPV (multi position valve) on top is its own thing and can be replaced.

The filter vessel should last a generation. Maybe more.

The model # should be on the MPV. I can't make the whole sticker out from the pic. Googling that rabit hole may shed light on the filter it's normally paired with.

Then replace just the MPV, the whole thing, or upgrade to a 22 inch if it's a 16 inch (etc).
