What filter brand? (Hayward, Unicel, or Porpoise)

When I was at the pool store I told the guy I had a Pleatco filter at my current rental house. He said to never use Pleatco as they need replacing within 6 months. He recommended their store brand (Porpoise, if I remember correctly), as it was half price from the Hayward filter and both the store brand and Hayward are good for a year.

Original Hayward filter is a C1100-RE. I plan to buy something like this from Amazon. At $60 it's not much cheaper than the Hayward which is $80. If it's just as good as the Hayward then I'm keen to save the $20.

Amazon.com : Unicel C-8610 Hayward Star Clear II C1100 CX1100 Swimming Pool Filter Cartridge : Swimming Pool Cartridge Filters : Garden Outdoor

What do the experts here say?

After reading some posts here at TFP I've seen that several here have had good performance from Pleatco. That is the cheapest filter on amazon, so if it's decent then I will get that. I don't need this filter to last years as I might not be in this rental for more than a year.

Sounds like someone is trying to pull-in some $$$. I've been using Pleatco replacement filters for my C1200 and they work fine. The one I have in there now is beat to heck, but still does its job. I don't even mess with trying to do deep cleans or acid washes anymore. Not worth my time. I just rinse as needed and once it's falling apart at the filter bands, then I replace it. I think my current cartridge filter is 2 year old..... maybe older. I'm bad. :whip:

I thought that might be the case with the pool store guy. Pleatco sounds good enough for me, and in any case it will be far better than the one currently that's in there.
