My pool heater is a Smart Pool Heating System by Energy Kinetics that is a dedicated zone from my boiler. The controller provided for this zone is a Ranco ETC-112000-000.
Everything except the temperature sensor for this controller works fine, so looking for some possible tweaks/improvements.
The instructions that came with the controller recommended strapping the temperature sensor to the pipe feeding from the pool into the pump, and covering this with a good amount of insulation. That might work well for a pool pad that either completely enclosed or in complete shade, but mine is in direct sunlight at all times, which causes the sensor to register anywhere from 10 to 40 degrees higher than what the pool water actually is.
I was thinking of any of the following, but would need advice on a portion of each:
Any guidance/advice, particularly on #2 above?

I was thinking of any of the following, but would need advice on a portion of each:
- Possibly replacing the sensor with a standard pool temperature sensor that could be inserted directly into and strapped to the pipe feeding into the pump, but those sensors appear to be generally 10K ohm, and the one required by the controller is 30K ohm. Are there any pool temperature sensors with straps that are 30K ohm? I haven't found any online.
- Obtaining a thermowell (preferably stainless steel) that could be screwed into the 2" Schedule 40 PVC pipe leading into my pool pump, so I could just insert the probe I've got into it, and it'll be much closer to being in direct contact with the water. Just not sure what kind of thermowell would be appropriate - and considering my sensor is 2" long, the thermowell would likely need to go in at a 45 degree angle, or at the bend of one of the 45/90 degree PVC fittings.
- Obtaining a completely different controller that would allow wifi access to the temperature controls - just not sure what would properly interface with my boiler's zone control board.
Any guidance/advice, particularly on #2 above?
