Finally cleared up my hazy pool after 2 weeks of SLAM. Adding DE to the sand filter really made the difference. I keep the pool set at 86 degrees and went for a swim today. I noticed the water in the deep end well was much colder than the surface water. It almost felt like diving into a thermocline. That got me wondering if the bottom water isn’t being circulated or treated. My pool has no bottom main drain. The previous owners did a plumbing refresh and replaced it with two side suction ports about 3’ deep on the same wall as the skimmer.

Circulating water in the hopper of the deep end is the main benefit of the main drain.

You are correct in your observation. The water does circulate, just slowly, and the water chemistry is not an issue.

Run your pool cleaner to mix the water in the deep end.

Thanks @ajw22. Unfortunately my robot seems to be afraid of the deep end and likes to hang out on the shallow side when I check it. I vacuum manually from time to time as well.
Fire the robot and hire one who will run around the bottom of the entire pool and churn the water.
