Hi,

My pool guy tells me that my TCell-940 salt generator went bad and needs to be replaced. It’s about $1300 from a local Hayward dealer. The TCell-15 seems to be cheaper ($900) with generics that are even lower ($500). Pool guy insists that I need the 940. Is he correct? My reading indicates the 15 should work but I will need to change a configuration in the controller. Want to double check here though.

(I’m trying to take over more pool maintenance, which is why I’m here, but still need his help for the opening. He’s really expensive and also seems to always require the most expensive products.)

You want a cell that is at least double your pool size in gallons. The larger the cell the less hard it works and longer it lives. What is the symptom of the bad cell? In LI the water in a outdoor pool is probably too cold for chorine generation right now. I hope he's not shining you on.

The T-940 cell should have had a 4 year warranty and outputs the same daily amount of chlorine as the T-15 cell. The T-15 cell should come with a three year warranty, be careful as some only have a one year warranty. The T-940 cell should outlast a T-15 cell as it is designed to last longer than the T-15 cell. Other than that they work the same and are interchangeable.

If you haven't had the cell for 4 years get it replaced under warranty.
