Hi all, the house I purchased a few months ago has an above ground pool and it was already closed for the season when we moved in. We're currently away for summer vacation so we didn't open the pool. Today my friend went to the house to check on things, and he noticed lots of tadpoles. (the rainwater has been accumulating on the cover, which we haven't touched over the winter). Sharing some pictures below:

The obvious question is how to prevent these from growing into frogs? I'm not sure if there's a way to drain the water, in fact I don't know much about the pool at all as I said this is a new house for us. Is it possible to put chemicals etc. in this water while the pool is closed? Unfortunately, relocating them is not an option since I'm away and need the simplest solution possible.

Thanks in advance.

I had this same challenge 30 days ago and now I have sparkly blue water.

My solution is gross, but effective: buy a pack of 30 or so skimmer socks off Amazon for about $10. Only run your filter and skimmer with a sock installed in your skimmer basket. Change the skimmer sock every 6 hours while the filter runs, and at first it will be black and appear like mud from all the dead tadpoles. Slowly, you’ll be changing cleaner and cleaner skimmer socks. Repeat until the sock comes out brown, then green, then yellow, then white (maybe 8-10 days til white?).

Lots of Chlorine will also help kill them, as you manually remove them.

Get someone to bug a cover pump and pump all that nasty water off the cover. If it has tadpoles that also means you have lots of mosquitoes too. It’s a Zika/malaria virus factory at this point …
