We have always had problems with the filter the pools come with and would like to upgrade to a sand filter, but which one is easily adaptable?

Welcome to TFP! 
Any of your standard sand filters from Hayward, Pentiar, etc will work. You do want to ensure you have a decent match between the filter size and pump. Many of those pools by Intex, Bestway, etc, have proprietary fittings and hose sizes that can by ever-so slightly different than a standard schedule 40 PVC fitting, but you should be able to secure your suction/return hoses to the multiport valve male adapter just fine. Tons of people here on the forum have done just that.
