Sucking air from the skimmer

Hello,

I've had my pool for 14 years. Now when I try vacuuming I loose suction right away. I noticed that when I select the skimmer port is when I get alot of air in the pump basket. When I select the drain it's fine (No air). Water level is over half way up on the the skimmer.
Any ideas would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Is it only collecting air when you are vacuuming? If so you may have a leak in the vacuum hose. If air is collecting when you use the skimmer only then check the plumbing between the skimmer and pump for an air leak. Pipe joints are usually where the leaks are located

maybe a picture of your valve setup? you apparently have a valve that can choose between skimmer only, drain only, or combined skim/drain,right? i am not familiar with that valve, but will assume all this is possible with your one valve, right? air problem exists only on skim only, right? if all this is right, when on combined skim/drain, are you getting any suction at all from the skimmer? if so, can you leave it in that position? perhaps there is simply a problem with the valve in skim only position. that would be better than a busted pipe underground....

A note on the vortex check: you will not be able to check for vortex if the pump basket immediately fills with air when you switch to skim only, because there is no suction at the skimmer. The vortex check can only be done when you are getting suction from the skimmer. But you will not likely get a vortex if the water level is above the indicator on the skimmer opening.
