South African Pool Test Kit

Hello from sunny South Africa!

I just bought a home with my very first pool. I’ve been devouring the Pool School articles. My pool guy has become lax, so I fired him and decided I’d do it myself.

What test kit is recommended that’s available here?

We can’t get TP Pro and the only test kits I have are testing strips 😖 or a dropper kit that only tests for chlorine, TA, and pH. My CYA has been coming up high on the test strips, so before I do anything drastic with my clear and comfortable pool, I’d like to test with an accurate testing kit.

Interested to hear what @SA Pentair User has to say.

There are likely import restrictions on the reagents from Taylor. I have found no GOOD sources for ZA.

I have no information that this website is reputable or even real. Use at your own risk. Looks like it is fulfilled out of UAE...no idea how warehouse or shipping would impact reagents. No idea how they can get it in the country and there is nobody else...
You would need this:
and this:

You might try Hatch SA at +27 11 7083705, E-mail: [email protected], Website: za.hach.com
They make Master Pool Test kit, 2315001 that can be found here: https://za.hach.com/test-kit-pool-master/product?id=55240870144

As for other options. You might contact these folks. They seem to sell Palintest and Hach colorimeters. While they can be less accurate, but without other solutions, may be your only other choice. They also are likely VERY expensive.

I searched earlier and there are plenty of pool stores in the Cape Town area. Their websites were scant on details, though. Might be a good idea to call around and ask what they offer and research the results.

Welcome!

I use a WaterLink spin touch. Not cheap but works well for me and it is distributed in South Africa. Most (as in 50% ish - not as in 100%) pool shops in SA (at least Johannesburg and Durban - where I have houses) seem to use this for testing water for clients.

That said, there are lots of very good test strips and drip kits available that are much more affordable. As I have 4 pools at both of my houses, I felt it was worth spending on the WaterLink unit. I am sure there will be some on here who are pro the unit and others who are not but it definitely works well for me.

Thank you for this! I appreciate your advice. I just have one 35.000 liter pool, so spending on a Water Link at this point may not be the greatest idea. If I do have troubles balancing the chemicals and having to waste a lot of water 😭 then I may look into it.

My HTH 3-in-1 kit and the test strips for CYA are keeping my pool sparkling, so I don’t have a huge need to switch at this moment.
