Simple Salt system - above ground pool ?

Upstate NY
Hello - I am having my 21' above ground re-installed tomorrow in upstate NY due to an issue with the pool wall which was about 12 years old. I bought a new pump and filter as they were 12 years old also. I was interested in salt, but the only option at the pool store was the Simple Salt system which they called "hybrid" - I'm not sure if this was just based on availability or because a full salt system doesn't work in above grounds in our climate.

In any event, from what I have found on this board and others, it seems this system is an overall negative as it's not a true 'salt' system and only releases copper to keep the pool clear, not necessarily clean. The 'instructions' indicate to just add 'shimmer' (shock) and 'vivid' (clarifier) weekly, and that's supposed to be enough.

Anyone with a good experience using this system, or am I better off leaving it out and returning it and maintaining on standard chlor tabs and shock? Installers will be plumbing the new external runs to the pump/filter, so don't want to bother installing if I'm better off not using it.

Thanks!

Anything that adds copper is something to stay away from. The goofy minerals and clarifiers stuff also doesn’t work well. I’d return it if you are able.

Regular salt systems work in above ground pools. There’s no difference.

Hey Jordan and Welcome !!!

Which model pump did you get ?

Your pool is about 10k gallons so check this link below for (CL) production rates from 0.5 to 1 lb per day. A 0.5lb per 24 hour unit would make about double what you needed with northern UV demand. As such it would only need to run about 12 hours a day and that would double it's lifespan.

Thanks for asking. Its a Speck E71-II VHV variable speed which was open box under warranty, so I got it for cheaper.

However I am just now just realizing that the filter is the Simple Clean 120 HB (for hybrid), I assume for use with the ‘hybrid’ simple salt system. Im now wondering if that filter will even work without the simple salt, or If I can just bypass the simple salt ionizer which is separate.

Awsome. Variable speed pumps make smaller SWGs much more appealing. With a small pool and a short season, you don't want a huge SWG, but you need longer runtime from a smaller (cheaper) SWG.

With some pumps you'd be saving on the smaller SWG just to give it to the electric company.

It looks like a standard issue 120 sq ft cartridge filter. It's small and will need a few cleanings a year, but it's easy to hose off and it'll probably be hot out anyway. Lol.
