Should center pipe in sand filter be glued to lateral assembly?

I have an old Hayward S-220T sand filter that I was trying to thoroughly clean during an equipment move and the center pipe broke off where it enters the lateral assembly. I was able to chip out the remaining pieces from inside the lateral assembly and it seems to fit a 1-1/2" schedule 40 PVC well, so I'm planning to use a piece of that as a replacement rather than purchasing an entirely new assembly.

I can't tell whether the pipe is meant to be glued inside the assembly? I'm assuming so, in order to be able to pull it out when needed, but before I glue anything thought I would double check. Anyone know for sure?

Yes, it should be glued. Also, the length is very important or the valve won't fit properly.
