Repairing a leaking fitting and had 2 paint layers on the exposed SCH40 PVC pipe around the pump. Used Acetone to remove the layers and found the pipe isn’t white but a burnt orange/brown color. I can presume it’s original pipe, as it’s got coupling repairs in a few places.
What is the lifespan of the PVC that’s exposed?
I can replace this area, and I’m sure painting it helped.

That's a really good question. Seeing that the use of PVC wasn't widely used prior to the 70s i would think its hard to tell. I do know that sunlight can degrade pvc and that's why some paint it. I would say use your best judgement. If the pipe feel britle replace it. The color you are seeing could just be paint soak, no telling what kind of pait was used. I have seen this before on older pipe. I'm not an expert so i can't really advise on life expectancy. These are just my thoughts and experiences.
