Salt Owners. Do you shock your salt water pool?

Hello all,

I am curious feedback on this topic. My pool is an area surrounded by trees and I get a good amount of organic matter in the pool weekly. I converted my pool over to salt all new equipment etc. I am still shocking my pool every one to two weeks if heavy swim loads or a lot of leaves etc. are getting into the pool. I also get chipmunks and on occassion mice in the skimmer basket and I feel to keep things clean and also prevent an algae breakout to continue that. Any thoughts on that and do you still shock your pool?

No point in "shocking" any pool. Just maintain the FC above the minimum for your CYA at all times according to the [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA].

Most of us will bump the FC up a bit with bleach before/after heavy use ... but I would not call that "shocking"

What test kit do you use to check your chlorine and cya levels?

I’ll also do what Jason described and bump my free chlorine level up (using liquid chlorine or bleach) if we have friends over or if there’s been a storm and I have more organics in the pool.

bt,

The whole point of having a saltwater pool is for the ease of maintenance... The whole point of TFP is to make the maintenance even easier..

As Jason points out, if you maintain your CYA and FC at the correct relationship, there is no reason to add weekly doses of anything... See this Chart... [FC/CYA][/FC/CYA]

I have not added a single bag of pool store shock, or any other pool store "magic", to my saltwater pool since it was new, over 4 years ago...

Thanks for posting,

Do you test your pool weekly and I cant imagine your PH has stayed within range in 4 years without adding any chemicals to it.

bt,

Sorry, I should have been more clear... I only add water, MA, CYA, and Salt, none of which I buy at the Pool Store...

I do not add any "magic" chemicals such as, but not limited to...

Algaecide
Clarifier
Phos-free
Stain or scale remover
Yellow Out
Green to Clear
Perfect Weekly
Algae Remover...
Power Powder Plus
Chlor Brite
Fresh N Clear

Thanks,

Jim R.
