removing pool stains/stain remover

Hi,

We have brownish/greenish stains on the sides and bottom of our gunite pool. The pool water is clear. I've been able to remove some of the stains below the tile with a brush but it's much harder to get leverage to apply force to the brush as the pool water gets deeper. Wondering if I should purchase a stain remover?

best,

I would first want to know what might have caused the stains? Any use of copper containing products? Did you open with a pile of leaves laying in that place that may have caused tannin stains?
If you want to purchase something, purchase Jack's Magic Stain ID kit.

It all depends on what type of stain it is? Raising your FC level a few points and brushing often may help.

Are you able to get in the pool yet? Can you try holding a chlorine puck on the spot for 3-4 min and see if that lightens it?

Hi, Quiet -- i had a big battle with iron stains last year that the fantastic people at this site helped me out with. There's lots of great links to reading info in my thread.

I posted a summary at the end -- but for me, for the iron staining, I used Ascorbic Acid (the Vitamin C) in the pool which released the iron from the sides, but it was then floating around in the water. My filter plus putting stuffed animal stuffing in my skimmer helped to get it out. I backwashed my filter frequently, and I could see all the iron that my filter caught. It hasn't come back in a year now.

Good luck!

hi kim, that was a great read, thanks and congrats on the fine work. I've seen a lot of references to CuLator, did you consider using that to remove iron from the pool water?
I did look into it, but the ascorbic acid and the stuffing worked so well, I didn't need to. I got the ascorbic acid at a site recommended on here (I don't remember it off the top of my head, but I can go look it up if it's helpful to you) - it was a big bulk package of maybe 3 - 4 lbs.

thanks, I'm sure I can find it. why ascorbic acid as opposed to a bio-guard or jacks magic solution? in the end, are the other solutions just re-badged aa?

we are getting ready to sell our house, listing tomorrow so I'm hesitant to risk green, cloudy water...I'll probably wait until we accept an offer (or don't have an offer!)

We rarely hear the Culator giving much in the way of results. I'd save the cash and buy a roll of paper towels. Its a choice between leaving the iron in the water and using a sequestrant routinely to "hide" it or do what you can work to rid a great deal of it from your pool using polyfil/paper towels in the water that you've let the iron come "out of solution" which means orange water.

Hi.. Quiet'
Ascorbic Acid (AA) will reduce the iron and remove it from the surfaces, but it doesn't remove it from the water. Neither does Jacks Magic. It is a sequestrant that will bind with the iron and eventually it will break down and the iron is back in the water. There are only 3 ways you can get the iron out of the water
1) Filter it- using a polyfill has maddie suggests
2) Drain it -After using AA to remove it from the surfaces, and a sequestrant to bind it you can drain and refill the pool with iron free water.
3) Use a sequestrant that can be filtered out. There are two products that do this (I believe) Metal Magic is the one I tried. It claims to create a crystalline by product that can be filtered out.
In all honesty I would use a sequestrant and disclose to the new owners that there is iron in the pool water. They probably won't know what that means until it turns green on them and they join here.
