My pool has a pressure side cleaner line that I do not use since I have a robot vac. The pool guy had an idea that instead of capping the line, we could turn it into another return line. So now it functions as another return jet (see attached pic of this modified plumbing). It seems unusual, so I'm wondering if there are there any downsides to this?

Splitting the flow there will send 50% of the water to your existing returns and 50% to the converted outlet. It may significantly reduce the flow and pressure of your existing returns. That may effect the way your pool circulates and skims.

There are 5 returns in the pool and 5 in the spa. Do you think that since he used a smaller diameter pipe, less than 50% of the water will flow through it?
It would be nice if there was an eyeball wall fitting I could screw in to that pressure side return.

So right now each of your returns gets approximately 20% of the flow. You will cut that in half.
Bernoulli's principle says the smaller pipe will get the 50% of the water and it will be at higher pressure due to the smaller pipe.
You need to put a 2 way diverter valve on that repurposed cleaner line to restrict the flow and balance it with the other returns.

Remove the hose, remove the hose fittings, put in 3/4" threaded plugs, problem solved. Five returns should be more than enough. Pool will be back to original designed flow.
