Quick question...Do I need to use the diverter valve in my skimmers if I don't have a main drain? Fiberglass pool with 2 skimmers and 3 returns.
Thank you in advance.

Welcome to TFP!

The diverter valve is meant to balance suction from the skimmer and a second suction source. That could be a main drain, a suction port, an equalizer, or another skimmer.

It also protects the pump in the event the water level drops. A float inside the valve will close suction from the skimmer and pull from other suction sources. If that other suction source is a skimmer, it won't do much good as both skimmers will be sucking air.

Do you know if the two skimmers are connected, or do they have separate valves to control suction? If connected, you need the valve in the closest skimmer to balance suction between the two. It's not a real precise way of controlling suction.

Thanks for your reply. The 2 skimmers are not connected and each has its own valve. Pool equipment is located well below the pool level. I'm just not getting great skimmer action for debris on top of the pool. even at higher pump speeds. All 3 return eyeballs are pointed down at a 45deg angle in the same direction.

Try pointing the returns more level - without actually breaking the surface. Also point them to allow the water to circulate in a toilet bowl type effect. This circular flow will help the surface debris get better skimmed.
