Good evening folks! Thank you for all for all of the help as always...

This year is a big year for us...we've had a vinyl liner pool that we put in ourselves the first few months of covid with the help of friends and family (cousin owns a construction company and i know a "pool guy"). But for 5 years now i've had a single speed pump, and a chlorine pool.

This year we're converting!

We are looking to open the pool and get the plumbing re-done at the same time as the opening...i dont want to open the pool using normal chlorine and chemicals...or am i overthinking it? Do i open the pool with the new SWG installed and just run normal water through it and balance it like normal at opening? then convert?

Or do i just open it and start dumping salt in (or it seems diamond water softener as a cheaper and equally effective alternative it seems).

Pool is 36,000 gallons. i cant' find a consistent recommendation on how much salt to start with but i thinks some math i did was around 26 40lb salt bags to start.

Thoughts on all of this would be great, thank you!

ps. installing a heater this year! Stoked about that...i think it'll really impact our use of the pool and how much we enjoy it here in CT. so a lot going on! Thanks!

Doesn’t matter.

My pool opens using liquid chlorine since the water temperature is below the cold water cutoff.

Then I raise the salt level to about 3000.

When the water warms up and the SWG begins generating I stop adding liquid chlorine.

There is no “conversion”.

Sorry, but if you are going to rely on Pool Store testing it will lead you astray.

We recommend you do your own testing or we really cannot help you.

you're right, i just youtubed that kit that was very easy. ive historically used strips but never re-agents. i'll buy that kit...what other kit would i need to maintain my salt pool? do you recommend the taylor k 2006? any automated machines folks in these forums say are accurate enough to use?

my salt gen, the circupool core control 55 i guess next month is having a new add on added...where you can upgrade for a few hundred bucks and it'll monitor PH and ORP....there will be another update to add in acid automation or co2 automation if you want to go that far.

TEST FIRST! You may be very surprised at how much salt is in your "fresh water" pool! Fewer bags to buy and haul.
Jury is out on the Core 55 monitoring of Ph and ORP. Just too new. Past history is that electronic measuring lacks much precision and needs frequent calibration. Always trust what the drop tests tell you - they are the gold standard. If you really need it, acid automation can be nice. But that all depends....since last year I went though one gallon of acid all season, the cost and time saved will take a really long time to pay off the automation. We generally find if you can keep your TA slightly lowish (50-60), the pool tends to stabilize toward the top of the "good" pH range.

i think you guys are right i like the idea of the automation stuff but i just ordered the tf-pro kit for actual testing. i'll figure it out i'm sure just never dove in this deep...i guess its time.

okay so i will open the pool...get it balanced properly BEFORE adding any salt. i'll test first and then enter all data into poolcalculator.com to get the calculation needed for adding the salt. i was going to just order the diamond pool salt from HD and pay the $35 for delivery to my house. i'm expecting 20+ bags needed which would not be fun to deal with in my car... the $35 seems worth it to me for delivery and it'll probably be on a pallet which is easier for me to move (front forks on my JD tractor).

Use the kit to test current salt level before adding or ORDERING salt. You may be surprised at the salt level in the pool already. 20+ bags is likely too much. Test salt first.

my mind is blown right now...this is great. i'm in the app...setting up profile. my salt gen i think is too new to list in here...do i just use a comparable one? maybe the RJ45 as it also has a 2.0lb/day rating?

What SWG do you have?

Fill out your signature with pool, pool equipment (include manufacturers and model numbers) and test kit info.
This assists us in providing you help without needing to ask each time for this important information.
