Pool motor sizing.

I purchased a home with a pool in October of 2024. The pool filter pump failed and instead of putting a new pump in I believe the sellers swapped the filter pump with the water feature pump. When I moved in the pool filter pump was 2 HP and the water feature pump is 1 HP. The water feature has 5 scuppers about 2 feet of the ground. That's 10 feet of head. I calculated a 3/4 HP motor should be on the filter. I put a 3/4 in on the water feature and the motor over heats in less than 5 minutes. I think it can't handle the lift. The old motor was also a 56y and the new motor is 48y. Some one mentioned if I switch from a 56 to a 48 to change out the impeller to. Thanks.

Welcome to TFP.

Motor HP must always be greater than or equal to impeller HP.

If your pump has a 1 HP motor and impeller, then changing to a 3/4 HP will overload the motor with the result you are getting.

Show us pictures of the pumps and the old and new motor data plate.

I am thinking they swapped the filter pump for the water feature pump before I purchased it so save themselves money.

Show me the labels on the front wet end of the pumps. You just showed the motor data. Need to know the model number of the pump and this the impeller.

It looks like you have Pentair pumps - either Whisperflo or Superflo.

You may need to open them up and see what model number impeller is in the pump to properly size the motor or change the impeller.

Impeller......Total HP.

073126.........0.95
073127.........1.25
073128.........1.65
073129.........2.20
073130.........2.60
073131.........3.45
