Pine instead of cedar?

I've only heard of cedar as well. Build one and see if it seals up. Worst case you can always drop a liner in it.
I will say that no wood spa, or inground spa, will ever come close to a portable spa in comfort and therapeutic benefits. They look cool, and are certainly enjoyable, but in my experience you will use it less often and for a shorter period than the average portable spa owner will. Just a little food for thought.

Here is some interesting reading for your DIY project.

+1 for both built in and wood spas. They look awesome and are a conversation piece, but you have to choose between form and function. They are 2 different animals. The debate will rage on forever because we all want our choice to include both.

I had a small 110V spa and although it sure felt 100X better than no spa, it was constantly disappointing when I hopped in wanting a full therapeutic experience after a long day. Now, for entertaining guests on the other hand, nobody is paying attention to the somewhat lackluster experience because they are engulfed in the having fun with friends aspect.

Decisions, decisions. Lol.

I know you're supposed to use clear cedar but they are hard to find. If you use knotty cedar, what are the chances that one of the knots blows out? I assume if it did you can just plug it with another piece of wood that swells?
Or put some water seal on them?

Or drill it out so it is round, and then hammer in a bung. They have been doing that with barrels for ages. They have also been making barrels out of material other than cedar for ages. Granted they do let liquid escape (the angels share and all of that) but its not as if they are dripping all over the place.
