PH not going down in 10ft above ground pool.

Thanks for your replies Richard, much appreciated.

Ok so I got the spirits of salts. Have not had chance to add any to the pool yet. But I tested the water again just now and I'm getting better readings.

Results:
PH: between 7.2-7.8
TA: between 180-240
FC:0

I seem to get better results after the pump has been off a few hours?

Also the test strip say to keep horizontal for 15 seconds. At 15 seconds the strips seem to be a close colour to the correct ph and ta but after about 30 seconds the colours get darker.
Should I take the reading at 15 seconds or wait for longer?

Follow their directions. There may be other reactions happening at a slower rate that will skew things. It happens with drop-type tests too. Also don't do the natural thing and set the strip on the card. The colors can wick with surface tension and interfere with the neighbor. Or should I type neighbour so you understand?

The test doesn't actually say a time to wait. Just to hold it horizontal for 15 sec. why you lot have to change words is beyond me  but hey if we were all the same this world would be quite a boring place.

Do I still add the SofS? Or start adding chlorine?

You should have been chlorinating all along. At the moment the pH is in range, so leave it be.

Ok so I am adding chlorine (dichlor) I know this will add cya but it is fresh water so need some cya.
Question is this is the first chlorine to be added since to pool went up 12 days ago. Should I add a higher amount to shock to pool and get the cya to the recommended level? If so what would be the amount of dichlor to add for the first amount?

Pool calc says to add 26g to get FC to 4ppm. Should I double that amount?

That depends on whether or not the water is cloudy or green or if the walls feel slimy. If not, no.

Also note dichlor is acidic, so it will further drive pH and TA down.

Yes ph could so with going down a bit. The kids got in yesterday and was saying it was slippery on the bottom so I got in and it was like an ice rink. Should I double dose?

Yes. In fact, I'd target 10 FC and recheck it in a few hours and take it back up. Remember that dichlor is almost 1:1 FC:CYA, so don't get carried away with it. I come up with 225g of dichlor adding 30 CYA.

So just tested the pool after adding 80g of dichlor yesterday evening reaching approx FC 8ppm.

This evenings Results:
PH: 7.2-7.8
TA: 120-180 ppm
FC: 2 ppm

Pool is crystal clear and no slime.
