Pentair Mastertemp 250 issues

At the end of last season I had water coming out of the bottom of my heater. To start this season I replaced the tube kit which solved my leak problem.

But after putting everything back together I now can’t get the heater to start up. When I turn the heater on nothing happens and after a few seconds I hear a click and then the AFS switch lights up on the back of the control board and the blower motor starts humming but doesn’t do anything. The service heater light also comes on.

I opened up the blower motor and I can spin the fan by hand with no issues so I know that isn’t seized up.

There is no blockage anywhere in the blower from critters, and the clear tubes from various locations going to the AFS switch are all clear.

Going through the troubleshooting steps in my manual it just directs me to a new control board.

What various test can I do to determine which part has actually failed (blower, control board, AFS)? These parts are expensive and they say they can’t be returned after purchase 😳.

I already invested $1500 on the tube kit replacement so I’m kind of all in on repairing this one now.

There was no issues with the blower motor last year that I know of.

Oh…last night I was playing with it again and if I hit the SPA ON button I had the issues above. If I hit the POOL ON button I just kept hearing clicks but no error lights came on and blower wouldn’t start up.

I only have a pool and no Spa.

When you say "tube kit" are you referring to the heater core? I replaced my heater core last year and had no issues when I fired it up. What flashes are your fenwall telling you? Also make sure your ignitor is working. Replace if in doubt since that is a consumable. Do you ever smell gas?

When I say tube kit I meant this:

Fenwall? I looked that part up and I don’t see that in my heater with any lights flashing. Like I mentioned above though when I start it up the AFS light comes on red on the back of my control board.

I did replace the ignitor since it came with the tube sheet replacement kit. How do I test it though to make sure it is working? Although I don’t think it ever gets that far since it kicks out with the AFS error.

I never smell any gas.

If you don't smell gas it's probably not the ignitor. I suspect something didn't go back together correctly. Did you take pics? Check the tubes that connect in the top of the combustion chamber to make sure they aren't reversed. Check all connections remove and reinstall them.

I believe I put everything back correctly. I kept everything together when I took off the top of the combustion chamber so I was just dealing with what was below.

I did have to disconnect some wiring that ran below the top of the chamber. I did take pictures and put those wires back in the same locations. Although based on lengths they could only go in certain spots anyway.

I guess next I will remove all connections and make sure they are on correct and clean and see if that helps. If not it looks like more research to find the problem.

Which tubes are you referring too?

The white ones in this pic...

Is the voltage into the heater 120V or 240V?

Do you have the red voltage plug installed or the black one?

Do not change the plug unless you are 100% sure that you know what you are doing.

Check the voltage into the heater with a multimeter.

It is 120v (black plug)

Not an electrician so some guidance on where I stick the volt meter would help lol.

But, I do have power if that’s what your asking. As mentioned above I am able to turn it on but blower never comes on and kicks out with AFS error.

When I was getting the single flashing light it was because the combustion chamber was full of water. I assume you checked again after the repair and it was fine?

If it worked before you started other than the heater core needed to be replaced, it should work now providing everything was hooked back up in the same place.

You did turn the gas back on right?

It was always 120 volts right? Usually heaters are set up as 220.

Mine had a TON of grounds so make sure you reconnected all of the ground wires.

Yes I did check to make sure the chamber didn’t have water in it.

Gas is all back on.

It was always 120v right from installation.

Not sure what else to try. But here is the album from my heater. These heaters are all pretty much the same under the hood maybe something will help.

Show me a pic of the CB the heater is connected to.

One flash of the Fenwal LED inficates an Airflow Fault.

Described in here is how to test the blower motor - Pentair MasterTemp Heaters - Further Reading

Check the capacitor in the blower motor.
