Pentair diverter valve - off position water flow

Think of the handle as a T and the top of the handle is the part that blocks off. Many even say 'off' there. Whether it's a 2 way or 3 way doesn't matter in regards to the orientation of the T.

This is allowing all 3 paths as positioned (slightly blocking the left a little)

I think the OP is asking which position is the better "off"?

If I understand correctly - they are wanting to know is it better to have the blocking "T" portion with flow or against flow. In a simple 2 way valve - I prefer to have it positioned so the flow pushes the "T" portion into the side of the housing - so in that case - the handle end points towards the pump. In a suction arrangement - I prefer to have the "T" portion positioned so the suction pulls the "T" portion into the side housing - thus the handle end points away from the pump.

For simplicity:

For a 2 way - I think of it as an arrow, not a "T", the arrow would point in the direction of flow to stop flow.

For a 3 way - which I consider a diverter valve, I would think you never want to totally stop flow, so then I would have the handle end point towards the pump/supply.
