Over flow pop up drain?

How complicated is it to install a pool overflow drain. From what I have seen, you install a little grate next to the skimmer and run a pipe from that to the curb where the pop up drain will be. I am only doing this because my HOA requires it. My plumber is saying it is an additional 2k, but I already have existing French drains with a pop up at the street as well. Would it really be 2k? Or is it as simple as either running a pipe to the curb or tapping into the existing lines from the French drain?

H,

It is as simple as you said..

I think the overflow in your pic is too low.. It is installed correctly, but it will keep water from ever getting above the center line of the skimmer.. This is where you would normally want your water level, but an overflow should prevent your pool from flooding over the decking, not keep your pool level from going an inch or two above the skimmer's centerline.

I know this, because this is the exact type of overflow I have. I had to 'modify' it to allow my water level to get up to what I wanted..

Mine goes into my deck drain system...

Thanks,

Jim R.

Kinda depends on if this is a new build or retrofitting one in an existing pool. Assuming this is a new build.

My builder rain a 1 inch pvc line from the upper part of the skimmer, into the drainage they installed under the pool deck. Not sure how well it will work, until we get a deluge of rain. I was actually surprised they installed one, as the other builders wanted to charge extra.

This is just a random picture I got online. But you would recommend to do one like this but just ensure it is installed higher?

H,

Yes and no... the one in your pic can't really be installed any higher than it is.. Kind of why I have the small problem I do.. If I had seen the slot looking overflow, before I built the pool that is what I would have used.. If you can figure out a way to install the one in your pic higher, that is what I would do..

Thanks,

Jim R.
