Hello!
We have had the Dolphin Triton PS since our pool was first completed, in late 2019. Well, it started acting funny (would not go for more than a few seconds) and we brought it in for diagnosis after we checked all of the obvious things. They told us the control board (I think it was called something else, but it was basically the brains of the robot) had to be replaced and would be nearly $600+ to do so.

This brought us on the hunt for a new robot because we cannot see spending that much to repair the one we had, which also needs new tracks and a new bearing, etc. soon.
We got with Marina Pool Supply per many recommendations I found on this board. They are super helpful and kind. We decided to go with the Active 30/S300 and have been waiting over a month for it to arrive to their store. Well, their delivery finally arrived but didn't have any of the Active 30 or S300 in their shipment. Boo!
Now we have to choose something different. Because I do not like manually vacuuming or skimming our pool and the leaves are dropping like crazy.

Truly, we upgraded to the Active 30/S300 so we could get the WiFi connectivity. Fast forward now -- the first option that has this is quite a bit more expensive than the A30/S300 was (nearly $300) and we don't really think that's worth it. Plus, the Triton was nearly $1k and died after just over 2 years so we are kind of "over" spending a lot of money on these things already. :)

So, my question is --- Can the Explorer E30 or Triton PS be controlled via a WiFi plug? The issue is that when we are out of town for longer than the weekly scheduler allows, our pool is a tragic mess when we get back so it would be awesome to be able to turn it on while we are away longer than the weekly scheduler allows for.

Our other option seems to be the Pentair Prowler 920 which does not have ANY additional features than the above, and is more expensive. Plus, from reading other posts here, their warranty is more difficult to deal with. But also, I understand it is just a rebranded Dolphin anyways. We also already have a cart for the Triton, which should also fit the Explorer E30 (I think, it looks basically the same) - if anyone knows otherwise please let me know.. so we do not need to buy and spend another $150 on a cart we don't need.

Is the E30 a good machine?
Should I risk it and just get another Triton?
The E30 is a bit less than the Triton. And sadly, both of these are about the same cost as what we were going to pay for the A30/S300 without the cart (n)

I would suggest going with the cheapest robot you can get (S200 type model) and then simply automating the plug to turn it on with a schedule. Two years is a terrible track record for failure … I’m at the 5 year mark with indication of potential failure ahead and I’m annoyed at that, 2 years would send me into conniptions. The cost of a new S200 type is roughly around $700. The motor costs $450 to replace. So if you can get 5 years out of an S200, then I don’t think it matters much of you go the motor replacement route or you just buy another hunk of plastic for a few hundred more.

Check out Aiper robots. I’m currently perusing their offerings and they look to be cheaper than Dolphin with the same or better features. Of their customer service/support is only 10% better than Dolphin, then that will be a light-year’s worth of difference compared to dealing with Maytronics.

M,

Why do you think you need the WiFi capabilities??

What robots did Marina tell you they received?

Thanks,

Jim R.
Wifi, so we can turn it on when we are not home on an extended vacation. The weekly timer only goes for 1 week and cannot be looped without being reset which we can't do when we are away.. Our pool gets messy from leaves and acorns or some other present from our giant oak tree year round.
This is why we went with the Active 30/S300- we could turn it on from the app when we aren't home.

Marina has Explorer E20 & E30, Nautilus CC, Triton PS (which is what died so we're replacing), Prowler 920, Prowler 930w and M600.

E20 And Nautilus don't seem to do waterline which we want. So we're looking at E30 and above.

This is what we are wondering- if we can get one of the less expensive (albeit only slightly than the Active 30) and automate it with a plug.
I ask because I was searching here and someone said the Nautilus and Explorer E30 couldn't be controlled with a smart plug so I wanted to see if others actually have done so and maybe that was out of date information.

I will look into Aiper as well. Thank you!

I just purchased the e30 from Marina and love it. Word of caution, if you're pool is that much of a leaf trap, going longer than a week without cleaning the filter in it is a bad idea anyway...

Thank you for that info!
We don't do that very often. Maybe a couple times a year for vacation, so it shouldn't be that terrible. ☺️

Are you able to control yours with a smart plug to set a routine that lasts longer than the weekly timer allows, and/or can you turn it on when you want to with the plug? (If you've tried this)

Haven't tried - also purchased the fine filter for it and with all the pollen we're getting right now, I doubt it could go three days and still run efficiently without cleaning it - just put the spring filters back in until this pollen dies down.
I was thinking about the smart plug last night and came across this Pentair Warrior SE - length of power cord and Aux power control - really didn't look that hard into it, but may be worth a look for you

The only caution with Aiper is that it is a risk being a new startup company. It’s a small company and by the look of their products and business address I wonder if it isn’t a small startup company run by former Maytronics employees. They are launching a new product via kickstarter in a day or two that is a “cordless” robot vacuum where the battery floats at the surface. It looks interesting.

Thanks for that additional info on Aiper!
I looked. I don't think they're ideal for our scenario. We need a large basket like the Dolphins have.

Most models you can control with an outdoor WiFi plug, by setting the robot up to come on when power is applied. Some older models can’t be set up in such a way and you have to manually hit the button on the unit to make it come on. I have a nautilus CC plus that can’t be used with a smart plug, but I automate mine using a SwitchBot and Alexa. (Also need the SwitchBot hub) The Switch Bot works surprisingly well.

I can confirm that the Explorer E30 absolutely can be put in "automation mode" and plugged into a cheap WiFi plug -- mine's been in the pool since the day it arrived in October, chugging along on a daily schedule. I've scheduled an extra or modified run a few times, including very early morning when they were going to be working on our power lines -- the LED on the robot, which isn't too noticeable during the day, was VERY concerning to the dog who woke us so she could rush out and save us from the pool monster!

As noted, you do still need to empty it. But it's a pretty big basket (I estimate at least 2x the Polaris 280 bag capacity), so in the non-leaf-drop seasons I suspect it could go a couple weeks. Our pool is away from the house, so it's fine to happen outside at some point every few days and think to empty it as a one-shot task; it would be considerably less convenient for me to have to go out, put the robot in, turn it on, and then remember to go back out and pull it out.

I've never seen such a thing!
It works to push that little "button" on the dolphin power supply? That's pretty cool if so!
I would need one of the button pushers and hub, right? Wonder if I could get 2 to reset the schedule along with the big on button 🤔

Yep. Just need one SwitchBot and one Switch Bot hub mini. I don’t mess with the schedule on the Nautilus as it’s not needed, I just have it set not to run a schedule. I just always leave the Nautilus plugged in. I can set up a schedule though Alexa or just tell Alexa to “clean the pool.”

This is called automation mode which is completely different than wifi capabilities that other dolphin models offer.
E20, e30, s200, triton ps & nautilus cc all have this functionality- its listed in the specs on the maytronics website. S200 also has waterline scrubbing but they are getting hard to come by.
I use automation mode for my nautilus cc with a cheap wifi plug (no hub needed) & really love it!
There are several threads here documenting how it works. There’s also a YouTube video floating around.

Interesting. Do you have the Nautilus CC or the CC plus? I could never get my CC plus to work with a wifi plug which is why I use SwitchBot. It works great for me and the CC plus scrubs the waterline…

Thank you. Do you happen to have a photo of how it sits on the power supply? I'm having a hard time figuring how it would work on there.
