New Hayward Pump Started Smoking

Hi all. So I replaced my Hayward SuperPump 1610 1.5hp (single speed). The pool is wired is for 230 and I made sure that I had the correct setting. Once I turned it on, it worked for 20 seconds and began to smoke badly. I immediately unplugged the pump and it smelled electrical. I called Hayward and they suggested that I send the pump back immediately. Has anyone had a similar experience?

Thanks,

Dave

It looks like the centrifugal switch contacts are bent and stuck closed which will burn out the capacitor.

See how the top copper strip is bent up?

If you fix the switch and replace the capacitor, it will likely work.

Is the picture after the burning?

Can you see if the capacitor is burned?

Capacitor looks fine. Not bloated or swollen. How should the copper strips be positioned? You are awesome!

It should look basically like below.

The weights (red W) are held in by the springs until the shaft is spinning and then the weights swing out and the center pivot drops down and the contacts open.

Try lifting the weights to see if the contacts open.

The red dot is the center point that drops down as the weights swing out and the contacts should open when the center point drops.

Note how the wires go inside the capacitor stands.

If you remove the capacitor, make sure the wires are inside the stands or they will get snagged by the weights as they swing out.
