Need Help with Freeze Options and Whisperflow Variable Speed Pump

I need help with my Whisperflow Variable Speed Pump. It is connected to an Intermatic 24-hour timer that controls when the pump comes on and goes off. I also have settings for three speeds on the pump itself, totaling about 12 hours. The Intermatic also has a freeze guard dial.

What I have noticed is that when the freeze guard is activated, the pump comes on but it doesn’t do anything. Just sits on, but no prime, speed, or flow. There isn’t any freeze guard settings on this pump (really wish I got a higher model with app control or something).

I really don’t want the pump running 24 hours every day, but I guess I will need to remove the timer on the intermatic in the winter and set the pump for 24 hours, or keep the timer on the intermatic, but change the pump settings for a 24 hour run. If I do that, and the intermatic turns off the pump with the timer, but freeze guard kicks on, will the pump resume stage 3 as that would be the schedule or would it just sit doing nothing again?

Just trying to find the best leave and forget method, especially for times I am not at home and this happens.

Thank you.

All the Intermatic freeze control does is power the pump. If the VS pump is not set to run at that time, it will not. You need to set the pump to run whenever it is powered if you want that freeze protection.

I don't know why you have the Intermatic timer switch the power to your VS pump. You should connect the pump to continuous power and let the pump controls set the runtimes.

The timer was already there, one for the pump and one for the booster vacuum, when the new VSP was installed. The company just added it where to old single speed pump was.

Maybe it’s because the timer has a freeze protection setup in it and the pump doesn’t?

Really wish I could just control it all in an app, or have it know the weather and automatically turn on.

Remove the timer and let the freeze guard run the pump 24/7 at a low speed for freeze protection. Or, keep the timer and set the pump to low so it works with the freeze guard when needed.
The freeze guard is connected to the timer I believe. It’s right next to the timer in the box.

I changed it where the last setting in the pump runs at 1500 for the remainder of the 24 hours. Kept the timer on. So hopefully when the freeze guard kick in, the pump will work.

This is what mine looks like.
