Muriatic acid - add at skimmer?

Is it OK to add the muriatic acid to the pool at the skimmer? That's been the most convenient place for me (my pool has a "lip" there which reduces the chance of any splashing on me. But after skimming this forum, it seems like most other advice says to add it at the return jets, or to pre-dilute it.

I'm also curious to ask how soon it's safe to swim after adding MA. Two weeks ago, I wasn't thinking about it, and added MA to the skimmer while I was IN the pool myself (with the pump and waterfall running, so there was good water circulation). Later that day I noticed a strange discoloration on my hand and wondered if it could be related. (No pain, no rash, no irritation, just discoloration.) Any words of advice? This is NOT the hand I used to handle the MA.

Never, Never add muriatic acid to your skimmer. The bolus of acid going through the equipment is very harmful.

Add acid using a pencil size stream from the jug at a return with pump running. Brush the area afterwards.

Once you have done the above, and put the jug of acid away, you can go swimming.

No, never add MA or any chemicals to the skimmer.

You can swim 15 minutes after adding MA.

Lower the open bottle into the pool by a return so it "floats", then tip it to
pour the MA. Makes it simpler and safer.

If you ever do get splashed, there's thousands of gallons of water right
there to rinse in. 😎
