Hello, we bought our house in Alabama with a 20 year old very large t-shaped pool with no cover in September 2019. It has a Hayward sand filter but the label has rubbed off. We were new pool owners with very little knowledge and the previous owner gave us a quick run thru about pool maintenance. We managed to close the pool, reopen and maintained a pretty pool last summer, although we did notice some sand in the pool. Fast forward to opening this year and trying to get our green pool clear and came upon TFP and now realizing alot of things, one of which has me wondering if I have really messed up!! The previous owner told me here the settings on the sand filter were....backwash at 6 o'clock, waste at 10 o'clock anod rinse at 2 o'clock....but after reading several articles, it seems like she told me wrong and the waste is at 2 o'clock and rinse at 10 o'clock....so if this true, I have been backwashing and then running the waste and never running the rinse!!! How do I find out for sure where the rinse and waste is on my sand filter???

Welcome to TFP! Don't quote me on this, but I "think" some Hayward label sequences may vary. Below is just one example. But if you turn off the pump between changing modes, you should see relatively quickly when you turn the system back on which mode it is in. But yes, a pic might help. Look clsely for any part numbers that may be stamped either on the valve or filter body itself.

Hi, welcome to TFP! Could you post a photo of your filter and equipment pad? Ones that includes the filter from the top and the side will help us help you figure it out. If you were running waste or rinse you would see dirty water come out of the waste line. If you were doing either until the water ran clear then you probably didn't do much harm to the pool, just didn't really clean the filter much and dumping dirty water back into the pool when you switched back to filter.
