Metal awning over pool deck

Wasn't sure what thread to post this under. We are going to start building a metal awning over our deck. Looking for some way to cover my pool so metal slag will not enter the pool. Has anyone ever done this?

And just to be safe, be sure the metal awning is properly bonded to the pool bonding grid.

If you have a winter cover that might suffice with an added fireproof tarp on top near the work area to prevent anything hot from penetrating. My husband is welder so we have several of these.
If you go the plywood & boards route get the thin underlayment stuff so its not too heavy on the top rails.

Normally, any metal within 5 feet of the pool water needs to be bonded to the pool bonding grid..
Metal fence, metal window frame, metal awning.

We don't cover our pool so I don't have a cover. May do as suggested by ajw22 and place wet towels over the plywood.

No need really for the towels if using plywood. Any welding slag may discolor it but you don’t really care about the plywood anyway. @Mdragger88 was suggesting that in case you used a pool cover instead of plywood. Welding slag could definitely melt through any type of pool cover.

I'm having the roof replaced over my pool at the moment, they've installed a scaffold platform covering everything to work from. There's a layer of fire-resistant plastic in there to catch anything dropped between the boards. Probably overkill unless work is happening over the water, temporary plywood deck is much easier.
