Make deep end Shallow?

We are getting bids to remodel out pool and during our conversation with one contractor he mentioned we could raise the bottom of the deep end by filling it in with gunite. Does this sound correct? My concern is if the added weight would have a negative affect on the pool structure if it was not reinforced during the original construction for that added weight. My guess is that the pool was built in the 80's.

Hi and welcome to TFP!

You CAN do as he says without any trouble or issues, well other than to your wallet LOL.

Now I do want to ask you IF this is something you want to do? To me there is nothing nicer than being able to dive into a nice, cool pool on a hot day (which I can't do in my above ground pool :( ) . What kind of depth(s) are you thinking and why?

I would keep the deep end too, but it's your pool, you know how you use it better than us. As for filling it in, depending upon how much depth you need to raise up, I'd think maybe 57 stone with a layer of gunite over time, or perhaps crushed aggregate with a layer of gunite over top might be cheaper? I have no experience in this though, so ...

Hey Jim!!! What is the current depth and the preferred one? They fill in old deep pools fairly frequently. It's definitely a thing.

The current depth is just shy of 8' and we would raise it to about 5'. It had a diving board but the slope is a neck breaker design and no way I would feel comfortable letting anyone dive off a board. Everyone congregates in the shallow areas now and rarely does the deep end get any use. We have plenty of shade so not keeping the water cool is not a concern. Its a 23,000 gal pool.

Okay so you have used or not used as the case may be the pool and know what you need. That is all I wanted to make sure of.

Now lets talk about the depths. Take a tape measure to the shortest adult in the house. See where 4.5' and 5' hit them. Have a discussion after that.
