Leathered Akoya marble

Our pool builder installed this as our “leathered” coping: we were expecting a suede finish, not a heavily pebbled one. Is this right? We got what on left but expected what’s on right

They should have gotten your approval before installing the stones.

Did they give you any samples or pictures of the stone that was supposed to be used?

Did you have any agreement for them to provide samples for your approval before installation?

Did you have any agreement for them to get for your approval of the actual stones before installation?

Sadly we didn’t do any of that. We upgraded to a custom pool when the builder offered a standard pool with our build. We got a photo of the marble but unless you blow it up really big you can’t see any texture.

Basically we just want to know if such a heavy texturing is “normal” for a leathered finish which is what we ordered. Having seen many leathered counters I thought I this meant a sueded/brushed look and feel where we could still clearly see the veining etc. Instead we got this highly pebbled/tumbled texture. The second photo is the reverse side of the marble, which I contend was supposed to be face up rather than the highly textured side.

If the first photo is within the spectrum of normal leathered finish then caveat emptor. Thought we would check with some experts. Thanks to anyone who shares their wisdom.

It looks way too rough to me.

Maybe they put it on upside down?

I would tell them to fix it.

You don't like it and it is going to bug you forever.

Just get it done like you want now so you can be happy.

Even if you have to pay a nominal fee, it's worth it.

Also, ask the project manager to keep you informed and to check in with you as things get done.

For example, before the plaster is put in, make sure that it is 100% exactly what you expect for color and texture.

leathered finish
I had not even heard of this term for tile before now. As far as I know this has not been used on any of the builds since I started here. I have been a part of most of the builds. I also did a search for that term on here and did not find anything.

So what is next? That is up to you and your wallet. The PB can remove the tile and put in new tile. Who pays for it is between you and the PB. This all sounds like a lack of communication. That needs to be fixed before any more work is done. Get everything in writing to keep everyone on the same page.

I will find out how much to flip it over. It’s not rough it’s just much more texture and much less marble looking that I expected.

If it is more texture than you want, then that means that it is too rough.

The other side will be coated in mortar, so you can't just flip it over.

You have to replace the stones or somehow remove the mortar.

Did they use a white mortar or a grey mortar?

How much did the stones cost total?

The builder needs to keep you in the loop more to make sure that everything meets your approval.

This includes things like coping, tile, plaster, decking etc.

Before anything is done, it is important to get your approval for the finished product for all metrics that matter.
