I notice I have a bit of water buildup around the ring at the top of my sand filter. Last week I opened it up cleaned off the top and retighten. Are there any other steps I should be taking prevent it?

Check the condition of the O-ring. It may just need some silicone lube or it may have been pinched when you put the lid back on. If the O-ring is damaged it will need to be replaced.

Make sure the oring is in good shape and use an appropriate lubricant on it.
I use Lube Tube $8.39 Amazon Prime. Enough for quite a while and is useful on many other items around the house.
Lube your refrigerator seal and it will last a lot longer. Especially the hinge side.

Yes I think it would be fine and you may be able to get it at home Depot today. Lube Tube on Amazon is good too.
The suggestion of vasoline was just an urgent need suggestion and not a permanent solution.
I just cleaned my sand filter yesterday and used lube tube. One note for easy assembly. My setup is all hard PVC piping with pipe unions to allow easy disassembly. If yours has unions make sure you just get them started on the threads and then tighten up the diverter valve. This gives just enough play to get the valve on and then tighten everything.
