Lap pool or spa only?

HI, my backyard has a 45 degree decline and in order for us to construct a pool, we have to structurally build two retaining walls below the pool to hold the surcharge. They are implied in the artist's rendition. One is at the very property edge and goes 6' into the picture.

That retaining cost is still being estimated. In addition, there would be the cost of the pool, equipment vault, etc. So, since we are still in the planning stage, the pool is starting to add up and is at least $250K+ with retaining. That isn't what we budgeted (we budgeted $150K tops).

The pool is for lap swimming and is currently 8'x53'. However, since it takes so much room in the backyard, we are thinking of having it only go by the two columns which would reduce it to around 25' (if just past each column) and making it a pool and spa. If we do that, I am interested in adding swim jets. This also reduces the amount of retaining to about half of what it was.

So, this thread is really about what swim jets actually work and would I use them. Aesthetically, the pool is a nice thing to have but I don't want to just stare at the pool and never use it. We would use the spa for sure. Awe are currently trying to get into try the endless pool swim jets just to try but this is not an endless pool job. I also found the Badu jets but they really don't distribute a whole lot on the west coast.

Would you only do a spa and I would continue to swim at the local pool? Or, have a space (maybe 10' to 12' for spa) and the pool with jets (at least 15').

Lastly, if you had to perform retaining for your pool, who coordinated the design and build? Right now, depending on which contractor I talk to (we are interviewing), some want the pool architect and his engineering to own the retaining and there are pool architects who only want the pool and expect me to get the GC and structural. Ugh.

Welcome to TFP :)

That will be an awesome looking pool when done...

I would do one pool architect and his engineering to own the retaining wall project .. That way they own the complete project and have no scapegoats..

Cost is always a factor.. I think a spa and pool would look great and if you got a swim pump or 2 installed you could still use it for laps. The badu swim setup looks nice, you can easily get your contractor to install it... You could easily connect 2, 3 hp VS pumps and do the same thing with some automation, or get a 4hp VS pump just like they are using... Or you can just buy the pump and have them install it.. :)

Thanks for the reply. Do you have any experience in swimming with the Badu jets? I looked at their website and their distributors are mostly in the midwest and east coast. I agree with the pool contractor doing both. Out here, they are so busy, we are finding it hard to get them to respond.
