We bought a house 25 years ago, were naive, never knew what or where a junction box was or located. Now in the process of remodeling backyard which will allow us access to wiring from current pool light. We want to replace the old light with newer, colored light.
Question: can we establish a new junction box without knowing the missing location of the old junction box? Thanks.

You would likely find the junction box in the process of remodeling, or it may not be there. Usually the junction box is located near the light. What type of light is it?

Generally if you were running new electrical cable you'd pull it through the light conduit by attaching it to the old cable. In that process you'd find the old cable and junction box.

Junction boxes used to be placed in the deck under the diving board.

If you look at where your lights are placed in the pool and where your electrical panel or light switch is the junction box is somewhere between those two points.

No idea. Came with house. Circular.
The question for me is the need to even locate the old missing junction box if I plan to remove and replace the original light with a contemporary one. All the covering and dirt behind the light will be removed and area exposed. I assume new light will come with all appropriate wiring and instructions about installing a new junction box.

Certainly you could abandon the old wiring. Also see code for a light junction box they have to be a certain height above the water level.

If you're digging down anyways it makes sense to replace all the conduit. Don't worry about finding the junction box.
Location should be 8" above the water unless potted and at least 4' away from the pool. Double check the NEC though.

Pools of a certain age in California might have in-deck junction boxes. I spent months looking for one of mine before moving some deck furniture and finally exposing it. See mine at the bottom of the photo.

I would try to find the old box. Starting at the light, walk away from the pool and look in all the places where a cable might have been pulled in a straight line.
